The Warri-Itakpe Train Service is a railway system in Nigeria connecting the port city of Warri to the inland town of Itakpe. This railway project began in 1987 with the goal of supplying iron ore and coal to the Ajaokuta Steel Mill. After more than 30 years of construction, it was inaugurated in 2020, serving both freight and passengers.
Originally, the railway was intended to transport iron ore to the steel mill. However, it was extended to Warri, a port city on the Atlantic Ocean. In 2017, work resumed with the help of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. It finally opened in 2020, providing both passenger and freight services.
There are plans to extend the railway to Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, as part of the Lagos-Kano Standard Gauge Railway project, which will further enhance transportation connectivity in the country.
